Machine grinding and polishing

The machine grinding and polishing is a method of obtaining a smooth finish by rubbing the surface of a work with the surface of a lapping tool. This method is used to finish the surface of metals.

Surface finishing by rubbing the surface of a work and the surface of a lapping tool against each other

The grinding machine and polishing by rubbing the surface of a work and the surface of a lapping tool against each other is a process that can provide an outstanding finish to a product. Traditionally, this was done by hand, but new manufacturing technologies now allow for high-speed processing.

Magnetorheological finishing is one of these fabrication techniques. This is a high-speed, computer-controlled technology that is used in a variety of applications. This article will concentrate on the effects of this process on the surface finish of a gear.

The results show that coatings with higher levels of lubricant have a better surface finish. However, those with lower lubricant levels had a poorer surface finish.

The effects of superfinishing were also investigated. Gear teeth that had been superfinished with AISI 93 10 steel had a near-mirror finish. A comparison of the average root-mean-square roughness, which is a measure of surface roughness, was about a factor of five less than the average roughness before superfinishing.

An interferometric microscope was used to evaluate the effects of superfinishing. Surface fatigue tests were performed at a contact stress of 248 ksi Hertz to assess the effect of superfinishing on gear life.
